in pictures: trans day of vengeance
March 31st 2023, in the week following the emboldened march of far right groups at the steps of parliament, a high turnout occurred for the annual Trans Day of Visibility Protest. Despite the poor weather, well over a thousand people gathered in and around the CBD to listen to speakers, and march on the steps of parliament.
Umbrellas were the predominant theme, but the mood was raucous, and supporters from all walks of life were in attendance. Notable turnouts were the group Bikers Against Transphobia, and representatives from the Trade Hall Union.
Beginning at 5.30, the rally lasted well into the evening, as calls for representation, respect, and equality echoed to every far corner of the CBD.
Shot on black and white film, and developed by Queerlab, a photo lab run by and for LGBTQIA+ film photographers, these images represent a small glimpse into the unapologetic, loud and proud mood that pervaded the procession.
